Sunshine Award PLN

Blogging and Professional Learning Networks

Since changing jobs from superintendent of technology to the superintendent of human resources and leadership development, I have not been blogging.

I have been active on Twitter and keep my "EdTech" curation active and daily on ScoopIT.

11 Random Facts about Tom D'Amico

1.  In elementary school my dream job was to either become a clown or the Prime Minister. (Interesting to think of the links between Politics and Comedy!)

2.  After high school my passion was to become a professional soccer play - not teaching.

3.  After completing a Master's degree in physical education (administration), my first career job was the general manager of Ottawa's pro soccer team, the Ottawa Intrepid

4.  For the last 21 years I've been an NHL off-ice official, and have attended over 750 NHL games

5.  I"ll have been married to my wonderful wife Michelle, for 25 years as of this summer (2014)

6.  I'm proud of both my girls, Laura (Wilfrid Laurier University) and Christina (St. Mark h.s.) for their volunteer work and compassion and contributions to others

7. As a teacher, I learned how to do magic tricks, to help keep my students engaged...even when the learning activity was probably boring

8. In 1991 I started the first ever multimedia computer course in Ontario - lots of fun as we ran a simulated company, The Multimedia Manor, and students learned multimedia and how to run a business - true project based learning

9. I have loved every one of my jobs with the Ottawa Catholic School Board and feel privileged to work in this progressive School Board

10. I've only ever taken one computer course in university - Fortran!

11. Pizza, followed by watching a hockey game (and chips and dip)  is where it's at!

Answers to Paul's 11 Questions

1.  What is the most important educational issue for you right now?
System digital transformation so that all students benefit from increased engagement and resulting increases in achievement

2.  What motivates you right now.
The potential to leverage low-cost or no-cost technology as a tool in the hands of talented educators

3.  If you could meet anyone living or dead who would it be?
I'd have a dinner party with the following people - Jesus, Einstein, Mother Teresa, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Steve Jobs, and Helen Keller... we should be able to find something to talk about! (table only seats 8)

4.  What piece of technology are you most excited about now?
SmartPhones and Tablets continue to be key devices to leverage learning

5.  As a child, did you like school?
Yes, I loved school - especially playing soccer at recess!

6.  What are the three qualities of a master teacher?
- ability to motivate and engage all students
- ability to create a trusting environment
- ability to admit and make mistakes

7.  What makes teachers most memorable to children?
- Those teachers that genuinely care about the well-being of each child first, and their subject matter second

8.  Describe one highlight moment in your career.
- being nominated by my staff as one of Canada's outstanding principals - this was a great honour

9. Describe one place you would like to visit.
Space if I could afford the price tag - but if not, then the ruins of Greece

10.  What is your favourite hike? 
From the fridge to the couch... or from the 100 level of the Canadian Tire Centre to the Press Box (sorry Paul!)

11.  Atlantic coast, Pacific coast which one do you like better.
I love the people from the Atlantic coast, but I prefer the weather and scenery of the Pacific Coast
